Whether you choose natural, artificial, or a combination of both lighting sources for your plants, understanding how light impacts the plant’s physiology and development will determine the overall look and health.
When I first started growing with lights, some plants would not bloom while others grew with extra-long petioles, despite given plenty of light. Turns out, light quality was incorrect for those plants. Don’t make the same mistake I did!
Envision how you want your plant to look. Do you want compact growth? Do you want to encourage variegation? Or perhaps you want very large, sprawling plants. Do you want very dark green foliage? Whatever attributes you are looking for, there are studies out there that have looked at the different types of lighting and how it impacts plant development.
There are pros and cons to each light source, which will be detailed in both my 2020 AVSA lighting program and expanded in the blogs below.
